Gastric Bypass Surgery Information
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery, also referred to as (RNY surgery), is one of the most performed weight loss surgeries. This type of surgery reduces the size of the stomach by dividing the stomach into two sections and creating a new much smaller stomach called a pouch. The new stomach pouch will hold approximately two ounces of food. This smaller stomach allows you to eat less at each meal and chew your food more slowly, which helps you to lose weight. You will feel satisfied after eating small amounts of food in the same way you would feel full after eating a large meal before your surgery. And, the calories bypass your stomach and are not absorbed into your system which also aids in your weight loss.
During the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the stomach is reduced by using surgical staples to make a little pouch at the top portion of the stomach. Through bypassing the main stomach, the new pouch is attached to the center of the small intestine. This laparoscopic surgery typically takes about two hours using general anesthesia. Surgical staples are used in place of traditional stitches that help to prevent leaking and post surgery complications. Expect to spend between 2 to 3 days in the hospital. The majority of people can resume their regular activities in about 4 weeks. You will be placed on a liquid diet for the first few weeks after surgery. Then, you will slowly transition to pureed food to softened food and then to solid foods.
