Find Out Why
Mexico is a Better Choice for Weight Loss Surgery Than India

More and more citizens of the United States are researching out these days to contact Mexican hospitals or clinics to get weight loss surgeries such as vertical sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, LAP-BAND and plastic surgery. Getting these procedures in the United States can be quite the price tag and not all insurances will help to cover part, if any, of the costs. For these reasons many people have been electively choosing to travel to mainly India or Mexico to get these types of procedures done. Although both have their advantages and prestigious doctors, for more reasons than just location, Mexico is appearing to gain the title for being the top destination to go to for medical tourism.
Just because medical surgeries can be more affordable in different countries it doesn’t necessarily mean that the medical care has to be any less. In the case of Mexico, doctors who perform weight loss surgeries have often times studied in medical schools in the United States, and are just as qualified as any other doctor located in the U.S., if not better. Additionally, because of the time these surgeons have spent in America, they usually speak English very fluently and can communicate every step of the procedure to patients clearly, and answer all questions patients may have with solid, detailed answers.
Interestingly, often times the doctors in top Mexican facilities that perform weight loss surgeries have more experience than American doctors who perform the very same types of surgeries. This is because some procedures in the United States can take years to receive FDA and USA approval, and by the time they have been approved, very few doctors will have had an opportunity to learn how to perform these surgeries with experience. During the time that the U.S. judges the approval of these surgeries however, Mexican doctors have already been performing hundreds of them in their country.
Despite this fact, U.S. citizens are still sometimes weary about traveling to Mexico to get weight loss surgery because of personal safety reasons, citing the fact that there are bad cities with high amounts of crime. However, the United States has extremely violent cities as does every other country in the world, and although some cities like Tijuana, Monterrey and Mexicali sometimes get a bad reputation, they also have very nice, safe areas. These cities are very close to U.S. borders so if an emergency were to arise, it would be easy and quick to return home, as opposed to being all the way in India.
Additionally, airlines have recently been lowering fares to places like Monterrey, San Diego, and Mexico, making the financial burden of getting there and paying for the surgery much less than if traveling to India or staying in the United States. Because flights to Mexico from the U.S. are significantly shorter, there is also much less of a chance of developing DVT (deep vein thrombosis) during the flight. DVT occurs when a person has been exposed to long periods of time of inactivity and restriction, such as being on an airplane. This can lead to blot clots forming and building up in the veins, ultimately leading to a possible heart attack, serious illness, stroke, or even death. After surgery the body is more prone to form blood clots, so having a shorter flight home like from Mexico to the U.S., as opposed to from India to the U.S., can be significantly healthier for a recovering patient.
Mexico and its people are very proud of their recent medical developments and are enjoying the profits and recognition their doctors are getting from American driven medical tourism. They have held their construction and care to high standards, ensuring that in their new facilities the healthcare systems are similar to the type of treatment one would receive in the United States. For an American citizen, the close proximity, lower flight costs, shorter flight times, and significantly cheaper costs are reason enough to choose Mexico over India for any weight loss related surgery they may need.
